You may have heard the entrepreneurs you follow talk about how one of the keys to business success is making a positive difference in the world and thought “my little business is way too small to make a change.”

Well, I have good news for you - no-one is too small to make a difference. Here are some powerful ways for you to make an impact even if your business is small.

Help people

Let’s start simple! We remember the people who have helped us, whether it’s running after us to to give us something we’ve dropped or providing some much-needed support and advice.

So if you see an opportunity for you and your area of expertise to give someone a helping hand, do it! Fill up your karma meter, and guess what? If you’ve helped someone, they’ll think of you when it comes to working with or recommending someone who does what you do.

Pay attention to what others need and help them where you can - it really does make a difference.

Stand for something

In the age of options, customers want to buy from businesses with strong values. Often, we don’t just buy the best, we choose to buy from businesses who resonate with our own principles.

So don’t be afraid to share your values and opinions - in modern business, authentic honesty will get you far. Generic trend following will not.

Share worthy causes

The easiest way to make a difference? Use your platform to share causes, campaigns and organisations who are doing things you care about. In a similar vein to my last point, we’re more conscious than ever of global issues, and you can help make a positive difference by sharing causes you care about and showing your audience how they can make a difference too, whether that’s by sharing, donating or acting.

Don’t be afraid to be different

Fitting in might be beneficial at school, but it could be deadly to your business. There’s a reason there’s such an emphasis on having a unique selling point - you need to show your customers why they should be working with you instead of the other options available. So don’t be afraid to be stand out and be different.

Sharing your process, opinions and really going the extra mile for your customers will cement you as a leader in your field. Try completely new approaches and ways to do business and you’ll become the go-to person for what you do.

Focus on community

I’m calling it now: modern business is going to be all about community, not competition. In an increasingly digitally connected world, we’re feeling more isolated than ever. Despite running a business and working from home being “the dream”, it can get really lonely. So bringing people together and creating a community through your work will make a positive impact.

How can you do this with a small audience? Make an effort to connect with people online - don’t be a silent follower! Reply to peoples’ Instagram Stories and comment on their posts. Reply to tweets and Facebook posts asking for help. Become a connector and put people who would work well together or get on in touch.
